Midwestern port cities unaffected by BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Jun 15, 2010 8:41 AM PDT
MADISON (WKOW) — According to Maritime officials, barge shipments from Midwestern port cities including Winona, Minn. and La Crosse remain unaffected by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico at this time.

Unfortunately, the spreading oil is expected to reach the southern area of the Mississippi River by Wednesday.

Since the spill, the U.S. Coast Guard discontinued three ocean-going vessels for cleaning purposes. Spokesman Chris Bonura claims barge traffic in the Port of New Orleans is still normal.

Winona’s Judy Bodway of the Port Authority says corn and soybeans are sent to New Orleans. Crops are then transferred to ocean ships for international trade.

Tracking the oil spill and the gulf flowing into the mississippi river is one of those things that we would think we can protect against. Why can we not skim the oil up that are heading into the mississippi inlet ? Get some boats on it and remove the oil before the most vital shipping inlet in USA a block by oil. Come on now we can put a man on the moon but we cannot remove oil from a 5 mile wide inlet.
